Matting is defined as a loss of pile definition of a textile floor covering due to entanglement and compression of the pile fibers. In many instances there is a soiling influence. The carpet fibers may become compacted and entangled to the point they form an interlaced web of filament on the carpets' surface; at this point little can be done to restore the appearance of the carpet.
